01. Architectural Brief & Climate Context
Located in Housing Colony, Kamalia (30.7258° N, 72.6447° E), The Cantilever Courtyard Residence was commissioned by a multi-generational family seeking a residence that unites raw architectural permanence with climate-responsive comfort. Summer temperatures in central Punjab frequently exceed 44°C, making unshaded western glass facades thermally unsustainable.
Areesh Architecture & Builders approached this 50'-0" × 90'-0" (1 Kanal) plot by inverting the conventional suburban house layout. Instead of pushing a monolithic box to the setback limits, we carved a sunken double-height thermal courtyard into the core of the plan and projected a dramatic 14-foot board-formed RCC cantilever over the main car porch to shade the southern and western glazing throughout peak solar hours.
02. Spatial Zoning & 2D Floor Plan Hierarchy
The architectural plan is organized along a strict privacy gradient from street to rear courtyard:
- Formal Arrival & Guest Zone (Ground Level Front): A double-height entrance foyer separates the formal drawing room (baithak) and formal dining hall from the private family quarters. Guests can be hosted with dedicated powder room and pantry access without crossing into family circulation.
- Sunken Courtyard & Double-Height Family Lounge (Central Core): The main family living room wraps around a landscaped courtyard featuring a reflective water trough and a mature Neem tree. Operable aluminum-and-glass folding partitions merge the indoor lounge with the shaded courtyard during pleasant spring and winter months.
- Service & Culinary Spine (East Flank): A show kitchen fronts the family dining table, backed by a heavy-duty wet/grease kitchen, store, and direct utility access to the side service passage and servant quarters.
- Private En-Suite Bedrooms (Ground Rear & First Floor): Two barrier-free bedrooms occupy the quiet rear of the ground floor for senior family members, while three master suites, a study lounge, and a shaded terrace occupy the first floor.
03. Structural Engineering & Material Schedule
Every exposed surface was detailed in our 1:50 working drawings to celebrate honest materials:
| Structural / Architectural Element | Technical Specification | Performance Objective |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Cantilevered Upper Volume | 4,000 PSI RCC twin up-stand girder system (750mm depth) with Grade-60 deformed steel reinforcement | Achieves a 14'-0" column-free porch projection with zero mid-span deflection |
| West & South Exterior Envelope | 300mm insulated double-skin masonry (115mm A-class brick + 50mm rockwool air cavity + 115mm interior wythe) | Cuts peak afternoon conductive solar heat gain by approximately 38% |
| Facade Concrete Finish | Pine-plank board-formed fair-faced concrete sealed with breathable hydrophobic silane-siloxane | Weather-resistant raw brutalist texture requiring zero repainting |
| Solar Control Screens | Custom fabricated 16-gauge powder-coated galvanized mild steel vertical louvers on pivot hinges | Filters low-angle western glare while preserving cross-breezes |
04. Turnkey Execution & Handover Outcome
Delivered under a unified Design + Turnkey Construction contract by Areesh Architecture & Builders, the project progressed from soil bearing capacity verification and municipal map approval to final architectural lighting calibration in 11 months. Concealed UPVC drainage, three-phase load-balanced electrical distribution boards, solar hybrid inverter readiness (15 kW), and custom Burma teak joinery were executed strictly to our stamped construction binder.
